The mission of Hope’s Beacon Baptist Church is to communicate and give witness to the eternal hope of Jesus Christ for all, by bringing Hope home
Goals:
Bring Hope Home, by proclaiming Jesus in word and witness through multiple modes, to people including those that are unfamiliar with the Bible, congregationally unconnected, unchurched and dwelling in spiritually dying and at-risk communities.
Help spiritually revitalize and disciple people so that they can actively rely on and share the eternal Hope of Jesus Christ.
Hope’s Beacon Baptist Church (HBBC) was established to resuscitate and strengthen the spiritual life and vitality of the Carroll Park neighborhood situated in the Overbrook community of West Philadelphia. In a span of approximately two years several Christian churches have withdrawn from the neighborhood following membership declines and the aging, of leaders and members. Further, within an even shorter span of time, maybe 6-9 months, deadly gun violence has taken a heavy toll on the neighborhood. This has been especially tragic amongst young men and their families, captive to the trauma of street life. The area has experienced multiple handgun fatalities and severe injuries and crippling of young men who called the neighborhood home. Ironically, most of the deaths have occurred within a 4-5 block radius of where neighborhood churches once thrived.
It seems that the spiritual life and vitality of the neighborhood and its families ebbed and departed with the churches. In its places were left despair, fear and rage translated into implosive violence and death. It seems that hope, also made a desperate escape from the suffocating poverty and lack of opportunities. The neighborhood has become witness to violent rivalries among the young men living merely two or three streets apart. Similarly, young men are resorting to highly dangerous, self and turf protective measures. They literally are both entrepreneurial victim and predator of a illicit culture of drug trafficking and street survival.
While HBBC and pastor Byrd disagree with the approaches, methods and tactics used by many of these youngmen to survive the streets, hustle income, achieve social stature and exercise dominance in their spaces; this ill conceived and poisonous merchandising and deadly combat must not continue and result in additional peer sanctioned and administered, capital punishment. The unacceptable occupational hazards of death and even maiming are far too great a toll. Such tolls are unacceptable to God and His Church and must be countered with eternal hope.
Pastor Byrd believes that it is the church, inspired, equipped, and compelled by Jesus Christ that must intervene in these spiritually dangerous circumstances and conditions .
Whether the church is based in a bricks and mortar or virtual sanctuary, it must authentically usher in and help sustain spiritual life in the place and lives of those it engages. Only through the incarnational love and presence of Christ embodied by the church, can both real time and eternal hope, be welcomed, actualized and accommodated in the spiritual and material lives of such stakeholders. Hope’s Beacon is committed to this ministry of spiritual renewal, hope growing, deep love and trustworthy service. Please join us in cultivating, restoring and resurrecting Hope in the neighborhood.
As such, HBBC will rely on the text of the Bible and faithful interpretations of its doctrines and principles for establishing and sustaining our faith and witness as a Christian fellowship and congregation. In complement to its spiritual, pastoral, social, devotional, and missional tasks, HBBC will carefully seek out and appropriate best practices drawn from professional disciplines, Christian ethics and promising ministerial engagement as may further its ministry and the improvement of the spiritual life of the neighborhood residents and stakeholders.
